Description

Diablo Immortal character comes with six legendary gem slots. Each gem is assigned an amount, ranging from 1 to five stars. These ratings can't be changed, and that has a significant impact on its value. Gems that have five stars are rarer than one-star gems. Legendary gems are upgradeable by consuming other legendary gems. The simplest method to achieve this is through drinking other famous gems. A gem that has been upgraded in all aspects can become even more powerful through the "gem resonance" process that requiresyes, you read that right -additional legendary gems, at least five gems for each gem slot.

If you're trying to enhance your character -- and the ability to maximize your character is actually what Diablo is all about -- you'll require an abundance of legendary gems: to find the most appropriate ones for your style, to get great star ratings, improve the gems you already have, and eventually to slot into each gem's extra resonance slots. It's endless.

In the Diablo Immortal's myriad of currencies, upgrade paths, and reward strategies, legendary gems is where the business model gets bitten the hardest. Blizzard and NetEase aren't so reckless as to offer directly to players through a loot device or gacha but what they have come up with is, somewhat, more concerning. Legendary gems are only dropped by the bosses of the randomly generated Elder Rift dungeons, and you can only guarantee an infamous gem drop by applying an iconic crest modifier to the dungeon before starting it. The drop rates for gems that are legendary are very low.

If you don't spend any money on the game, you will just get one legendary crest every month. Buying the battle pass will be rewarded with two or three additional legendary crests every month. In addition, you'll need to buy them in person. Legendary crests are priced somewhere between $2 and $3 apiece. The massive amount of gems that you'll need to increase the power of your character's equipment given the extremely low drop rates of five-star gems, is the reason the cost of maxing out your character for Diablo Immortal has been estimated to be between $50,000-$100,000 -- and perhaps more when you dive into the system of resonance for gems. (Rock Paper Shotgun is an extremely thorough breakdown of cost which is on the more sensible end of this spectrum.)
